Programme Highlights Q2 2024

As a small, locally led charity we love for those who support us to fully understand the impact they have in Uganda. Working continents apart, it can sometimes be a challenge to demonstrate the scale and need for our work by just reading a Facebook post or seeing a quick video. In this blog I am going to do my best to demonstrate the recent benefits that our communities in Kampala have seen by telling you all about our highlights from quarter 2 (Q2) of this year.

Before we go into the numbers, you may have noticed that our programme structure has shifted slightly in recent months, so I have added a short introduction into each programme area for clarity.

Community Outreach

Our Community Outreach Programme is where children and families in Kampala might first find out about the support that Kids Club Kampala can offer. Through this programme we can also identify those most in need of our support through working with community leaders to establish projects to aid communities, increase social cohesion, offer safe spaces for children to meet and play, and provide for immediate needs. This includes our Saturday Kids Clubs, Football Project and Girls Support Groups. Here are some highlights from Q2 …

  • 11 games organised at our Saturday Kids Clubs

  • 1 bible lesson took place, aimed at teaching children to help and care for one another through kind actions.

  • 858 children provided with nutritious snacks and fruit

  • 59 footballers and 4 trainers are currently enrolled onto the project

  • 48 football training sessions and drills took place

  • 84 girls counselling sessions conducted, here 564 sanitary towels were distributed

  • 48 football games played

Protecting

The Protecting Programme combines a community-based abuse prevention approach with emergency responses to safeguard children in imminent danger within 10 slum communities in Kampala. Below are some key stats which demonstrate the impact this programme has had in Q2.

  • 3 children were admitted to our Ewafe home

  • The 86 children currently staying at our Ewafe home took part in rehabilitation activities including education, agriculture, life skills, crafts, music, play and medical care.

  • 7 families were traced by our team in Uganda and 4 children were reintegrated with their families

  • 20 family follow ups were conducted

  • 1 child was identified for foster care

  • 3 prospective foster parents were registered and 1 foster parent training session was conducted

  • 3 foster families who currently foster a child were followed up with and provided with support

  • 3 community safeguarding officer’s meetings were held which were attended by 28 officers

  • 15 social justice cases were registered and assessed

Freya’s* mother, a child whose family we were able to trace, said ...

“I went seeking help, but my journey led me to believe that my daughter was dead. But I thank God that she is safe. Thank you Ewafe project.”

Educating

Our Educating Programme gives children the opportunity to learn through receiving a regular, high quality education. This includes our Encouraging Education project, which offers a free education to 100 3-6 year outs across 3 communities in Kampala. It also includes our School Sponsorship Project, which matches children with Child Sponsors who pay their school fees. In Q2 of this year, we achieved the following …

  • 4 new children enrolled onto our Encouraging Education project

  • 82 children received free, quality education as well as daily hot meals across our 3 education centres.

  • 1 performance assessment conducted to monitor the children's progress. This assessment includes subjects such as Literacy, Numeracy, Health Habits, Social Development, and My environment. Health habits was the best performed subject overall, with 32 students scoring an A.

  • Of the 34 children who graduated at the end of 2023, 24 have been able to continue in formal education, 3 of which were sponsored through our Child Sponsorship Project. Of the 10 that haven’t yet joined school, 4 have relocated.

  • 1 teacher training conducted

  • 8 new children were enrolled onto the Child Sponsor Project

"My granddaughter is given a healthy meal every day, I can barely afford a decent meal for all my grandchildren. She is always happy as I pick her from the centre and always tells me stories from her class including which meal Aunt Lillian (cook at Katanga centre) prepared for them that day." – a grandmother of one of the children.

Skilling

Our Skilling Programme offers free, vocational training and business skills to parents to help them generate income for their families. Through tailoring, knitting, craft making, carpentry, livestock investments, and business skills training, graduates gain new skills and are able to generate a secure income, lifting themselves and their families out of poverty. Here are some highlights from Q2 …

  • 52 participants trained in tailoring and knitting

  • 30 students mentored through our tailoring and knitting projects

  • 12 carpentry students trained

  • 1 parents meeting held for carpentry students

  • 9 carpentry students attended a mentor session, facilitated by the officer in charge of crimes at Kimwanyi police post. He specifically addressed social skills, drug abuse and rebellion.

It is really important to us that our supporters can see and understand the impact of their support, but what if I told you that your donation and impact could be doubled

We are fast approaching the Big Give Christmas Challenge 2024, a match funding campaign where for one week only (3rd - 10th Dec), all gifts are matched, meaning your donation is doubled. Here are some ways you can get involved this year ...

  • Plan a fundraiser! If you are planning a Christmas get together, why not use this as an opportunity to double your impact in Kampala?

  • Make a donation during the week, all support makes a HUGE difference!

  • Spread the word. The more people that know about the challenge, the more likely that we will reach our target.
